I love the chance to get in a nap as much as the next person (Did you know that a number of famous historical figures regularly took naps? Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Eleanor Roosevelt, Winston Churchill.). As helpful as a nap can be, however, there’s a different type of rest we need – especially in the midst of the rigors of coaching.
The path to this type of rest is found in God’s command in Psalm 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I am God.” Part of knowing that He is God is acknowledging that I am not God – meaning, I am not ultimately in control; I am not sovereign over all; I am not all-powerful, all-knowing, or present everywhere. As important as it is to work hard and give our best effort to our approach to coaching, it is just as important to recognize our complete dependence upon God. He reigns over all, he loves us, and he is always good. We see this clearly in what God has done and is doing through his Son, Jesus Christ. Apart from him we can do nothing of lasting value (John 15:5).
To be effective as a coach and in every other area of your life, it’s critical that you find moments each day to be still and know that He is God. Renew your trust in him and his work no matter how intense things are around you. Rest in him. “My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.” (Psalm 62:1, 2) This is a far deeper, more effective rest than even the best nap can provide!
